Eric Almanza
My current body of work examines the intersection between politics, culture and identity as crafted through the lens of a Chicano painter working in the context of contemporary aesthetics. My work draws inspiration from traditional history and easel painting and artists such as Jacques Louis David, Gustave Courbet, José Guadalupe Posada, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Jorge González Camarena, Carlos Almaraz, Vincent Valdez and the band Rage Against the Machine. I hold a BA in Art Practice from the University of California, Berkeley, a Secondary Teaching Credential from California State Dominguez Hills and an MFA in Figurative Painting from Laguna College of Art and Design. I keep an artist’s studio in the LBC and curate exhibitions at Gallery 99, a micro gallery in my front yard.

“Diego Simeone, El Cholo”
The subject of my piece is Diego Simeone, Athletico Madrid former player now manager. Known for his aggressive hard charging tackles and passion as a player he has carried that spirit onto the touchline as a manager. He once described his playing style as that of a "warrior holding a knife between his teeth, a fighter who aims to give everything". Simeone's nickname is "El Cholo" which signifies toughness, grit, and passion. He has a never say die coaching philosophy. I made this piece digitally using Photoshop.

My imagining for this micro gallery is a room. Inside is an inner world. The inner world is known, it is familiar but it is small. It is close. And the security it offers is false. The snakes on the walls are signaling imminent change.
The outer world holds danger, and unpredictability. But also power, and beauty. The paintings on the walls are like windows that look out into a fantasy of the outer world. A dream of freedom and wild tenderness.
The style of the paintings is inspired by vintage children's books and my lifelong love affair with horses.
